Whey Protein : All About It

Whey protein is the protein contained in whey, the watery portion of milk that separates from the curds when making cheese.
Find out all about whey protein – pros and cons!

Whey protein is the protein contained in whey, the watery portion of milk that separates from the curds when making cheese.

It is used for improving athletic performance, as a food supplement, as an alternative to milk for people with lactose intolerance, for replacing or supplementing milk-based infant formulas, and for reversing weight loss and increasing glutathione (GSH) in people with HIV disease.

Is natural form of milk better than the powdered milk?

Whey protein is also used for protein allergy, asthma, high cholesterol, obesity and weight loss, preventing allergies in infants, late-stage cancer, and colon cancer.

How does it work?

Even the bacteria in your gut govern how much you are going to weigh!

Whey protein is generally regarded as a safe supplement when used appropriately, but you’ll still want to take steps to make sure that you aren’t getting carried away with it. Overconsumption of protein, when coupled with a low carbohydrate intake, can lead to problems

Side effects May include:

  1. Gain Fats: If you’re using whey protein to build lean muscle you probably don’t want to gain weight in the form of fat. But many times whey protein will come with added sugars and therefore added carbohydrates, and some can contain added fat as well.
  2. Could Form Kidney Stones : Excessive amounts of protein causes kidney stones. While there is no conclusive evidence that it causes them, whey protein doesn’t seem to help prevent them, and can worsen the condition if it’s already present. One way to make sure that you don’t get kidney stones from using whey protein is to get enough fiber in your diet. Adequate amounts of fiber and water will help your body maintain itself and prevent the buildup of deposits that can lead to a kidney stone.
  3. Digestive Trouble: Because it is sourced from dairy, whey protein contains lactose, which could end up giving you digestive problems if you are sensitive to it.
  4. Could Develop Gout: It’s not likely that you’d get gout from drinking protein shakes unless you were already showing signs of it, and unless you consume far more than is recommended. But it is something to be aware of if you have a family history of gout.Along with the protein in whey protein, there is also a large amount of amino acids. If your body can’t process these effectively they’ll build up in your system and cause problems with your liver and other organs designed to filter these substances and put them to use.

Turmeric has proven, medically, to be effective against –

  1. Cholesterol and Steroids: Various studies have suggested that turmeric helps reducing cholesterol. It may prove to be an alternative to medicines such as Lipitor/Atorvastatin(cholesterol medication). Corticosteroids (steroid medications) – A 1999 study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research found that the primary polyphenol in turmeric, the saffron colored pigment known as curcumin, compared favorably to steroids in the management of chronic anterior uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease.
  2. Antidepressants and Blood Thinner: A 2011 study published in the journalActa Poloniae Pharmaceutica found that curcumin compared favorably to both drugs in reducing depressive behavior in an animal model. It may replace Prozac/Fluoxetine & Imipramine  (antidepressants). A 1986 in vitro and ex vivo study published in the journalArzneimittelforschung found that curcumin has anti-platelet and prostacyclin modulating effects compared to aspirin, indicating it may have value in patients prone to vascular thrombosis and requiring anti-arthritis therapy. Turmeric may prove to be an alternative to Aspirin.

  3. Anti-Inflammatory and Chemotherapy: A study shows that turmeric is an effective alternative to the drugs aspirin, ibuprofen, sulindac, phenylbutazone, naproxen, indomethacin, diclofenac, dexamethasone, celecoxib, and tamoxifen in exerting anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activity against tumor cells. Oxaliplatin (chemotherapy drug): A 2007 study published in the International Journal of Cancer found that curcumin compares favorably with oxaliplatin as an antiproliferative agenet in colorectal cell lines.
  4. Fights Diabetes: Turmeric is valuable in treating diabetes, finding that it activates AMPK (which increases glucose uptake) and suppresses gluconeogenic gene expression  (which suppresses glucose production in the liver) in hepatoma cells.
One may also control TypeII diabetes with simple lifestyle changes. Interestingly, they found curcumin to be 500 times to 100,000 times (in the form known as tetrahydro curcuminoids (THC)) more potent than Metformin in activating AMPK and its downstream target acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC).
A research has also lead to making an artificial pancreas that is more effective than insulin! sugar cube
  5. Cancer Treatment: Another way in which turmeric and its components reveal their remarkable therapeutic properties is in research on drug resistant- and multi-drug resistant cancers.
Apart from turmeric, even olive oil compounds have been found out to have cancer-killing properties.

How to protect my Liver?

Prevention is better than cure!

This statement always holds true for all instances of life. It is always better to take precautions than suffer ailments and bitterness of medicines.

We are going to discuss what all can be done to prevent Liver damage:

[Watch]Don’t consume alcohol, but there are whole lists of benefits of Vodka!!
  2. Reduce Consuming Pain Killers: Dr. Jensen recommends limiting the use of pain medications containing acetaminophen to less than 2,000 milligrams a day. “Acetaminophen can cause liver damage on its own, so if your liver is already harmed from other causes, the threshold for damage is lower,” he explains
  3. Discuss Your Medicines With Your Doctor: Each time you visit the doc, make sure you inform him/her about your existing prescriptions and recent health history. Some drugs are metabolized by the liver and may cause further harm when your liver is already damaged. Even supplements that are marketed as “natural” can interfere with liver function and cause severe side effects.

Too much Virgin Olive Oil Harmful?

Olive oil undoubtedly has plenty of benefits. It increases life expectancies, lowers the risk of heart diseases like High Blood Pressure and stroke, has lower MUFA fats. Also, recently, a research has shown that olive oil compounds have properties that can kill cancer in about 60 minutes.

But like any other edible article, over consumption of Olive Oil may too be harmful. It is indeed possible to get too much of a good thing. If you consume too much olive oil, even high-quality extra virgin olive oil, you expose yourself to several health risks
(Source: Live Strong)

Few of the harms could be:

  1. High-Calorie Intake: Like all oils, Olive Oil too contains calories; contains 120 calories per tbsp. That’s a problem, because if you don’t burn off those calories through activity, they’ll get stored as fat, causing you to gain weight, damaging your physical appearance and exposing you to all the health risks that come with being too heavy.
  2. High-Fat Content: While olive oil is better than animal-based fats such as butter or lard, too much of any kind of fat is bad for you. Excessive fat consumption — which the American Heart Association defines as fat consumption in excess of 35 percent of your total caloric intake — increases your risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.Did you know that in a recent research, an artificial pancreas have been developed that fight diabetes far better than how insulin syringes can.
  3. Unbalanced Diet: If you eat far too much extra virgin olive oil, you may not be as hungry for the whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats you need to thrive.
