In the context of nutrition, a mineral is a chemical element required as an essential nutrient by organisms to perform functions necessary for life.  Most of the minerals in a human diet come from eating plants and animals or from drinking water. As a group, minerals are one of the four groups of essential nutrients, the others of which are vitamins, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids. The five major minerals in the human body are calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and magnesium.

Calcium makes up approximately 2 percent of your total body weight and contributes to many basic body functions, including disease prevention and absorption of other nutrients. Consuming enough calcium — between 1,000 and 1,200 milligrams per day for healthy men and women — is a must for optimal nutrition and health. Calcium is key for the health of your bones and teeth, but it also affects your muscles, hormones, nerve function, and ability to form blood clots.

Calcium in periodic table

Calcium performs a number of basic functions in your body. Your body uses 99 percent of its calcium to keep your bones and teeth strong, thereby supporting skeletal structure and function.

What happens if you consume too much Calcium?

Consuming too much calcium, especially in the form of calcium supplements, can lead to constipation and kidney stones. The Institute of Medicine recommends healthy men and women limit their daily calcium consumption to 2,000 to 2,500 milligrams. Taking too much calcium may also lead to side effects such as dry mouth, a continuing headache, increased thirst, irritability, loss of appetite, depression, a metallic taste in the mouth, and fatigue.

Everything You Need To Know About Taurine!

Take a pass on the “crash and burn” high from caffeine and sugar – and taurine. The ingredients of these drinks, both mysterious and some not too mysterious, are a recipe for disaster. They may “give you wings,” but you’ll soon come tumbling down – and in the long run, crash really hard.

FICCI Research and Analysis Centre (FRAC), food, beverage and environment testing laboratory has constantly been working on developing test methods of various new and complex parameters that are present in food we eat and drinks we consume. In a recent development, FRAC’s technical team has developed testing facility for analysis of Taurine, am amino compound found in every energy drink that is out there in the market.

Here is everything you need to know about Taurine

Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, but it is often referred to as an amino acid, a chemical that is a required building block of protein. Taurine is found in large amounts in the brain, retina, heart, and blood cells called platelets. The best food sources are meat and fish.

Some people take taurine supplements as medicine to treat congestive heart failure (CHF), high blood pressure, liver disease (hepatitis), high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), and cystic fibrosis. Other uses include seizure disorders (epilepsy), autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), eye problems (disorders of the retina), diabetes, and alcoholism. It is also used to improve mental performance and as an antioxidant. Antioxidants protect cells of the body from damage that results from certain chemical reactions involving oxygen (oxidation). Because taurine is utilized by the body during exercise and in times of stress, it’s become a popular ingredient in energy drinks. Taurine shows an anxiolytic effect on the central nervous system, causing a possible reduction of anxiety symptoms associated with caffeine intake. While this may sound beneficial, perhaps its not the best thing to intake when seeking energy for your daily tasks.

Side Effects of Taurine

Since taurine produces high level of anxiety symptoms, over consumption of energy drinks may cause a cardiovascular problem. Studies have implicated energy drinks in illnesses ranging from high blood pressure to strokes and seizures to heart disease. For these reasons it’s been banned in some Scandinavian countries after being linked to the deaths of three consumers. (Source: GlobalHealing)

Project Saksham : A Training Program

Project Saksham was a week long program to improve the competency in water testing. The training included Chemical and Microbiological Analysis in water.

FICCI Research and Analysis Centre housed a national level training program at the Dwarka laboratory, New Delhi, code name : Project Saksham.

Project Saksham was a week long program to improve the competency in water testing. The training included Chemical and Microbiological Analysis in water.

FRAC has been conducting such training programs for many food / beverage manufacturers. Freshers who have entered this industry gain hands-on experience and perform analysis at the in-house labs of their organization.

Alcohols under FSSAI

And FSSAI strikes again!

In another development, it seems that FSSAI is now in action in full power. It seems to be taking alcoholic beverages under its list of standards to monitor the quality that is inflowing for its consumers.

A senior official told PTI :

Work is going on to prepare standards for alcohol and alcoholic beverages, in next two months the FSSAI will come up with draft notification seeking comments from the public

Among the drinks, whiskey, vodka, gin, beer and even breezer will come under the proposed standards, the official said.

According to NDTV:

Earlier this year, a meeting of the Central Advisory Committee had also discussed having standards for alcohol and alcoholic beverages. It was decided that once standards for alcohol and alcoholic beverages were finalised it shall be intimated to all states and UTs so that they may suitably advise the respective excise departments.

As the trend is going on, it seems that India is going to witness international levels of food standards soon, which is a great news to all the consumers, and to keep them healthy and aware of what they consume.

News From R&D

FICCI Research and Analysis Centre (FRAC) not only aims at providing best quality testing and results services, but its state of the art Research and Development facility makes sure that our consumers get to have all the added information about their products.

Here are a list of food articles, and findings corresponding to them, according to our R&D team :

  1. Therapeutic FoodTherapeutic food in general, is any a[[rp[roate food product or products, enhanced nutritionally, and thus, made to be more energy-dense and nutrient-dense. When needed, usually in the emergency situations, it should be used in effect as medicine, in conjunction with necessary therapy, for as short a time as possible. The subject of this commentary is a specific type of therapeutic food, now almost always in the form of commercial products, which in te last several years has leapt onto the nutrition scene. It has some special benefits. It is creating new opportunities, new challenges, and in our judgement, an increasing number of new problems. The this is to warn that the promotion of therapeutic food and its wider use may well undermine breastfeeding, which for children between 6-24+ months of age, is the best safeguard against malnutrition. Therapeutic food is high in energy and protein, with added electrolytes, mineral and vitamins.
  2. High Fibre Bread : High fibre is used to lower glucose levels, and increasing the dietary bulk. Rice bran contents were used as an ingredient to increase the nutritional value of bread. With this view point, the high fibre bread was prepared.
  3. Badam Kesar Milk Fortification : Health drink full of nutrition. Useful for all age group people. Simple recipe of milk kesar fortified, with appropriate vitamin and mineral mix to provide adequate nutrition.
  4. Diabodellite Cookies : New products were developed/designed for one of our customers from the bakery industry, new ingredients were introduced to increase the binding of the prepared cookies by our department and thereby, increasing the storage and logistics problem faced by them. This product was specially designed for diabetic patients to lower their blood pressure.
