PETA ad claims Beer is Better than Milk

“Got beer? It’s official: beer is better for you than milk!”. This is what a billboard sponsored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has claimed in Madison, Wisconsin, also known as America’s Dairyland.

Well, we knew about how Vodka is beneficial for health [Watch Video Here] but the benefits of beer were only known to dissolve stones (Did you know about Tonsil Stones?there is something called tonsil stones too!) and reduce bad cholesterol. However, PETA claims the following benefits, quoting sources like American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the Harvard School of Public Health, the American Journal of Epidemiology and the Journal of the American Dietetic Association :  beer aids longevity and strengthens bones, while milk causes obesity, diabetes and cancer.

Read here: How to fight diabetes with simple lifestyle changes?

A donation of $500 was made by PETA to MADD out of goodwill after the “Got Beer?” campaign was stripped off in 2000. The campaign was halted out of respect for MADD, PETA explained. After PETA was accused of promoting beer drinking through their campaigns, the organization stated that other beverages like juices, mineral water and soy milk are also recommended by them, and asked why beer has been over-hyped.

Did you know the benefits of having fresh juice from raw fruits and vegetables?

“Had we used soda instead of beer, there would have been no media interest in the campaign, of course. PETA urges everyone, beer-drinkers included, to drink responsibly. Where milk is concerned, there’s no such thing!,” PETA stated on its website. (Source: Yahoo! News)

Harmony and Positivity – The Role of Communication

FRAC is starting with a new series of posts – Holistic Care. We feel that what we eat is not the only food for soul. What we see, feel, speak, hear, touch ; everything is food for soul. Thus, we all require a holistic care to excel in life.

In today’s edition, we speak on – “ MAKING COMMUNICATION EFFECTIVE – THROUGH HARMONY AND POSITIVITY

THE PRINCIPLES OF CONVERSATION

The style of speech should be devoid of rise and fall in pitch. In fact, it should be like the divine current, flowing evenly since the beginning of creation.  Innumerable are its benefits, beyond the possibility of narration. This is a philosophy, that when the flow of conversation proceeds in such a manner, there develops a state of harmony between the two who are communicating with each other.  This results in effectiveness: whatever is spoken touches the hearts of persons. In other words, a sort of positive relationship is created with effectiveness. While communicating in this manner, only those words will be flowing out during conversations which are intended and are right. The technique for achieving this consists first of all in attempting to remove the rise and fall in the voice while talking, which is also called sharpness. This flow of speech will go on acquiring harmony to the extent that such a reduction is achieved progressively. ‘Sharpness’ does not imply only anger, which is very gross. The flow of speech should not carry any kind of weight in it. An illustration of this is a current of still air. This is very difficult to achieve, but everything is possible through sustained effort and courage.

BALANCED CONDITION OF THE MIND

The balanced condition of mind is an expression of the right attitude of man in all his activities, under varied circumstances. In a broad sense, it is the reflection of one’s character. It has a deep impact and a favorable influence on people who are associated with such a person.  It reveals itself in conversation, serious and long or light and short, which is devoid of excitement or emotional outburst; devoid of a rapid, short-tempered and moody reaction, but a prompt, methodical and civil expression of one’s own self. It is soft, cultured and smooth like the harmonious descent of divine grace. The pure heart pours itself forth naturally with nobility, magnanimity and love. It leaves an impression immediately and it progressively makes deep inroads into and establishes itself in the minds of all.

The voice may be modulated to avoid a high pitch or any variation of the tone, because that goes with anger and anger is a poison to spirituality. If a nasty and short temper is avoided, if the evil of anger is overcome, there is scope for the attainment of the balanced condition of mind. This frailty of man leads to loss of self-respect and individuality and results in unhappiness. It restrains the flow of divine grace. The greater the control over this attitude, the freer and more bounteous is the celestial gift. It is a pity that this important and essential principle of the use of the tongue in the inevitable and constant activity of man is not only overlooked but also neglected.  It is no doubt very difficult to control the mind.

NATURE OF SPEECH

  • He whose tongue is polite, civilized and cultured, has a large heart, pure and noble, and thus has wide sway over the minds of others. But equivocation is not to be encouraged.
  • A civil tongue is a prerequisite to achieve the goal of human life.
  • A cultured tongue rules the kingdom of the heart.
  • A polished tongue in discourse or conversation influences humanity and reigns supreme.

Everything You Need To Know About Taurine!

Take a pass on the “crash and burn” high from caffeine and sugar – and taurine. The ingredients of these drinks, both mysterious and some not too mysterious, are a recipe for disaster. They may “give you wings,” but you’ll soon come tumbling down – and in the long run, crash really hard.

FICCI Research and Analysis Centre (FRAC), food, beverage and environment testing laboratory has constantly been working on developing test methods of various new and complex parameters that are present in food we eat and drinks we consume. In a recent development, FRAC’s technical team has developed testing facility for analysis of Taurine, am amino compound found in every energy drink that is out there in the market.

Read: What happens when you consume Energy Drinks?

Here is everything you need to know about Taurine

Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid, but it is often referred to as an amino acid, a chemical that is a required building block of protein. Taurine is found in large amounts in the brain, retina, heart, and blood cells called platelets. The best food sources are meat and fish.

Some people take taurine supplements as medicine to treat congestive heart failure (CHF), high blood pressure, liver disease (hepatitis), high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), and cystic fibrosis. Other uses include seizure disorders (epilepsy), autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), eye problems (disorders of the retina), diabetes, and alcoholism. It is also used to improve mental performance and as an antioxidant. Antioxidants protect cells of the body from damage that results from certain chemical reactions involving oxygen (oxidation). (Source: WebMD)

Because taurine is utilized by the body during exercise and in times of stress, it’s become a popular ingredient in energy drinks. Taurine shows an anxiolytic effect on the central nervous system, causing a possible reduction of anxiety symptoms associated with caffeine intake. While this may sound beneficial, perhaps its not the best thing to intake when seeking energy for your daily tasks.

Side Effects of Taurine

Since taurine produces high level of anxiety symptoms, over consumption of energy drinks may cause a cardiovascular problem. Studies have implicated energy drinks in illnesses ranging from high blood pressure to strokes and seizures to heart disease. For these reasons it’s been banned in some Scandinavian countries after being linked to the deaths of three consumers. (Source: GlobalHealing)

Everything You Need To Know About Particulate Matter

Delhi has started with the second edition of its previously much-talked about Odd Even rule. The Odd-Even rule was implemented after the air in the national capital became too dangerous to breath in. All the media houses shouted few words all the time : “high PM levels; PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels cross the safe limit; air in Delhi too harmful”.

So how exactly does the PM levels harm our body? Infact, lets start with what exactly is PM?

Particulate matter (or PM) is the term used for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. Some particles, such as dust, dirt, soot, or smoke, are large or dark enough to be seen with the naked eye.

What is PM 10 and PM 2.5?

PM 10 is particulate matter 10 micrometers or less in diameter, PM  2.5 is particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter. PM2.5 is generally described as fine particles. By way of comparison, a human hair is about 100 micrometers, so roughly 40 fine particles could be placed on its width

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an air pollutant that is a concern for people’s health when levels in air are high. PM2.5 are tiny particles in the air that reduce visibility and cause the air to appear hazy when levels are elevated. Outdoor PM2.5 levels are most likely to be elevated on days with little or no wind or air mixing. The New York State Departments of Health (DOH) and Environmental Conservation (DEC) alert the public by issuing a PM2.5 Health Advisory when PM2.5 concentrations in outdoor air are expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

So where does the fine particulate matter come from?

There are outdoor and indoor sources of fine particles. Outside, fine particles primarily come from car, truck, bus and off-road vehicle (e.g., construction equipment, snowmobile, locomotive) exhausts, other operations that involve the burning of fuels such as wood, heating oil or coal and natural sources such as forest and grass fires. Fine particles also form from the reaction of gases or droplets in the atmosphere from sources such as power plants. These chemical reactions can occur miles from the original source of the emissions. PM2.5 is also produced by common indoor activities. Some indoor sources of fine particles are tobacco smoke, cooking (e.g., frying, sautéing, and broiling), burning candles or oil lamps, and operating fireplaces and fuel-burning space heaters (e.g., kerosene heaters).

What are the health effects?

  • premature death in people with heart or lung disease,
  • nonfatal heart attacks,
  • irregular heartbeat,
  • aggravated asthma,
  • decreased lung function, and
  • increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing.

Apart from health effects, presence of PM also affects the visibility around. It produces haze, which creates problems for people behind the wheels.

Did you know about Tonsil Stones?

Whenever we speak about stones, we can only think about stones in gall bladder or in kidney. But have you ever heard of Tonsil Stones, or tonsilloliths?

Our tonsils are filled with nooks and crannies where bacteria and other materials, including dead cells and mucous, can become trapped. When this happens, the debris can become concentrated in white formations, the tonsil stones, that occur in the pockets. Tonsil stones are most common in teens and those with large tonsils.  Those with poor dental hygiene may also experience tonsil stones.

How do I know if I have Tonsil Stones?

Typically, tonsil stones can be seen as white, yellow or grey nodes on the tonsils. Though, many tonsil stones aren’t visible because they are burrowed down inside of the tonsil.

Some people have no symptoms when afflicted with tonsil stones. Those who do have symptoms often report redness or irritation of the tonsils. There are several other symptoms that can be related to tonsil stones, with bad breath being one of the most obvious. According to the Mayo Clinic, bacteria grow on the stones, which produces a foul odor.

People with throat stones can also feel like they have something stuck in their throats.

Watch: Funny video on How to fight a sleepy day at work!

So, how bad can it be?

Tonsil infections that lead to chronic bad breath are most often due to tonsil stones. Although tonsil stones are fairly common, many dentists and physicians miss them completely when their patients complain of halitosis.

A study published in the journal Microbes and Infection concluded that tonsil stones cause halitosis because they are crawling with anaerobic bacteria.

More about remedies for foul breath!

And what’s the remedy?

Well, it really boils down to two things :

  1. Proper dental hygiene – for starters, try to brush the stone out, keep your oral hygiene in order, gargle with salt water twice a day.
  2. Surgery – this one needs some serious consideration. Tonsil removal surgeries involve bleeding, use of anesthesia, and well, no talking for some time!

Did know about these remedies for fighting sweaty hands?

Take care!

Dangers of Bromine in Food

Bromine is a chemical compound frequently used in flame retardants, baking ingredients, cell phones, plastic, dye, soda, and prescription drugs. Bromine is found naturally in the earth’s crust and in seawater in various chemical forms. Bromine can also be found as an alternative to chlorine in swimming pools. Products containing bromine are also used in agriculture and sanitation.

Research has identified the following 10 dangers of bromine as the most damaging to human health. Edibles that carry bromine are the most dangerous, as they are directly consumed.

Source: Global Healing Center

  1. Affects Thyroid Functionality: Lack of iodine causes thyroid related health problems. Bromine on the other hand is anti-iodine. It restricts the absorption of iodine in body, which is essential for the health of thyroid hormones. Bromine exposure impairs the gland, and results in health issues like hypothyroidism, goiter, and hormonal imbalance.

  2. Preterm Births and Birth Defects: Another role that iodine plays is keeping the process of conception and pregnancy healthy. And as stated above, Bromine restricts iodine absorption. Exposure to bromine to expectant mothers may increase risk for delivering preterm babies. Avoiding the bromine exposure can also be tricky. Even if you avoid baking ingredients and soda, bromine can also be present in drinking water. An Australian study even reported a link between bromide exposure and birth defects.Preterm birth caused due to bromine exposure
  3. Affects Cognitive Development and Failure: Mental dysfunction related to the overexposure to bromine is so common it even has a name — bromism. In one specific case of bromism, a patient consumed vast amounts of soda that contained brominated vegetable oil. The patient experienced problems including fatigue, headache, memory problems, and loss of muscle control.

High bromine intake causes slow cognitive development.

Everything you need to know about Amino Acids!

You need essential amino acids in your daily diet because your body cannot make them. If you do not get essential amino acids in your diet, proteins break down, resulting in muscle loss and problems with repair. Amino acids, which are building blocks of proteins, can be essential, non-essential or conditional.

Your body needs more than 20 total amino acids to build and repair muscles and tissues. The nine essential amino acids are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

Amino acids in food make up protein. When protein is digested it is once again broken down into specific amino acids, that are then selectively put together for different uses. These new proteins formed in the body are what make up most solid matter in the body: skin, eyes, heart, intestines, bones and, of course, muscle.

That’s why understanding what each of these aminos can do and getting more of them in your diet can be very beneficial to reaching specific goals, such as muscle building. Of course, one mustn’t exaggerate, because a good protein balance is what provides health and stability, without it any of the amino acids can become toxic.

An issue that has been brought up in the case of phenylalanine, but holds true for all amino acids. To counter potential harmful effects, getting enough vitamins and minerals is important because they insure proper conversion of protein to amino and vice versa.

Depending on who you talk to, there are around 20 to 22 standard amino acids. Of those 20-22, 8 to 10 of them are considered essential, which means that you need to get a certain amount of them in your diet to function properly – our bodies cannot synthesize them from other materials, so we only get them from food.

Since aminos are the building blocks of protein, I’m sure you get plenty of all of them, but this article will show you the benefits of supplementing with extra free form amino acids, going in to deep detail of what too much or too little of several of them can do, what they do in the body and how much and when you should use them.

Next to the 8 essential amino acids, there are around 14 non-essential amino acids and a whole host of other metabolites classed as amino acids which are derived from the 8 essential ones. Next to the 8 essential aminos, I will try to discuss a number of them that have made the headlines recently: L-Glutamine, L-Arginine, L-Carnitine, L-Cysteine, and HMB.

Ill Effects of Microbiological Bacteria in Water

Presence of microbiological contaminants are a health concern at certain levels of exposure. If water is inadequately treated, microbiological contaminants in that water may cause disease. Disease symptoms may include diarrhoea, cramps, nausea, and possibly jaundice, and any associated headaches and fatigue.

What not to do to keep your skin glowing?

One might be aware about what to do to keep skin healthy and glowing. But then there are things that shouldn’t be done, to keep your skin fine too!

  1. AlcoholAvoiding alcohol is especially recommended when the skin disease is on the face or head, where heat will naturally rise more rapidly and affect one’s appearance. Rosacea, acne, seborrheic or atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are the most likely to affect the face.
  2. Spices: This one might be a known fact for our India based readers! Hot pepper, black pepper, ginger and garlic are also contraindicated, as are all the “gingerbread house” spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove. This means avoiding chai teas, ginger teas, hummus, Thai food and the like. Of all of these, garlic seems to give the worst flare-ups of redness, burning and itch.
  3. Smoking: Smoking is something that should be avoided for much more serious reasons – it kills. It affects skin too. Cigarette smoking is strongly associated with psoriasis, especially pustular psoriasis of the palms and soles. Quitting will often improve the condition. Teenage acne, as well, is adversely affected by smoking. Teens already have a great deal of naturally occurring ‘heat’ in their lungs and stomach, as evidenced by their loud voices and voracious appetites – this is a sign of health and vitality during a time of great growth. However, smoking and drinking will push this lung and stomach heat over the upper limit of ‘normal,’ turning it into the red fire of acne.
    smoking
Before & after the smoking. It shows how smoking affects our skin!

Just quitting smoking will not help your lungs. You need to de-toxify it too!

  4. Oil, Shellfish and Tropical FruitsGreasy fried foods and bad oils are even worse, and should be avoided. Shellfish and fatty fish like salmon should be avoided for the same reason as oils, not only by weepy skin sufferers, but by anyone whose skin is red or itchy at all. Tropical fruit may also irritate. Mango, papaya, pineapple are the worst, while banana seems to be fine!

Although, fresh juice of raw fruits and vegetables have got plenty of benefits!

  5. Gluten, Sugar and Dairy Products: Gluten, sugar and dairy are only a problem for a very small proportion of people with skin disease, and that they do not need to be avoided by the vast majority of sufferers. It may be that avoiding these foods will improve digestion, but rarely will this translate into an improvement of the skin disease.

Watch how McDonald’s french fries are made!
Green tea, mint tea, salad, fruit, and clean, light meals, freshly prepared, are best. White pearled barley and beans are excellent at draining away excess mucus and dampness if the skin is oozy. Mung beans and aduki beans are wonderful at this, and all three of these substances double as “herbs” which are found in many skin prescriptions. When the eyes and face are red and itchy, jasmine, chamomile, mint and chrysanthemum teas are very soothing.

Changing one’s diet is not easy, and changing it forever is harder still. For some, a dietary change may bring new problems: tension, stress, guilt, binge eating, excessive self-control, and of course, hunger! These may have a more detrimental impact on our health than the eliminated foods. Listening to your own body is essential. For skin disease sufferers, adjusting the diet a little to avoid heat is a good idea. In combination with a cooling herbal treatment, a change of diet might be just the thing to cure a persistent skin disease.
