Why is Calcium required in our body?

Consuming too much calcium, especially in the form of calcium supplements, can lead to constipation and kidney stones.

In the context of nutrition, a mineral is a chemical element required as an essential nutrient by organisms to perform functions necessary for life.  Most of the minerals in a human diet come from eating plants and animals or from drinking water. As a group, minerals are one of the four groups of essential nutrients, the others of which are vitamins, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids. The five major minerals in the human body are calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and magnesium.

Calcium makes up approximately 2 percent of your total body weight and contributes to many basic body functions, including disease prevention and absorption of other nutrients. Consuming enough calcium — between 1,000 and 1,200 milligrams per day for healthy men and women — is a must for optimal nutrition and health. Calcium is key for the health of your bones and teeth, but it also affects your muscles, hormones, nerve function, and ability to form blood clots.

Calcium in periodic table

Calcium performs a number of basic functions in your body. Your body uses 99 percent of its calcium to keep your bones and teeth strong, thereby supporting skeletal structure and function.

Diseases due to Calcium deficiency

Low blood calcium levels and the lack of calcium may lead to the following low calcium symptoms:

  1. Fainting
  2. Heart failure
  3. Chest pains
  4. Numbness and tingling sensations around the mouth or in the fingers and toes
  5. Muscle cramps, particularly in the back and legs; may progress to muscle spasm ( tetany)
  6. Wheezing
  7. Difficulty swallowing
  8. Voice changes due to spasm of the larynx
  9. Irritability, impaired intellectual capacity, depression, anxiety, and personality changes
  10. Fatigue
  11. Seizures
  12. Coarse hair
  13. Brittle nails
  14. Psoriasis
  15. Dry skin
  16. Chronic itching
  17. Tooth decay
  18. Numbness or tingling in the extremities
  19. Muscle weakness
  20. Cataracts
  21. Osteoporosis symptoms (a backache; a gradual loss of height and an accompanying stooped posture; fractures of the spine, wrist, or hip)

What happens if you consume too much Calcium?

Consuming too much calcium, especially in the form of calcium supplements, can lead to constipation and kidney stones. The Institute of Medicine recommends healthy men and women limit their daily calcium consumption to 2,000 to 2,500 milligrams. Taking too much calcium may also lead to side effects such as dry mouth, a continuing headache, increased thirst, irritability, loss of appetite, depression, a metallic taste in the mouth, and fatigue.

Nourishment through Heartfulness Meditation

How does Heartfulness-Meditation nourish the mind, body, and soul?

The nutritional aspects of our existence vary for our physical body, for our mind and for our soul.  Our physical body receives nourishment through vitamins and minerals. We enrich our minds and educate ourselves through different educational systems, through school, college, books and the Internet.

What is the source of food for the soul?  It is the Divine Energy, Divine Essence, which is transmitted from the heart of the giver into another person’s heart. This Divine energy comes from the Eternal Source (Cosmic Energy).

And this is where Heartfulness Meditation comes into play its role.

The Science behind Heartfulness- Meditation

Science of Spirituality

0913_science_sa

There is no conflict between Science and Spirituality – both search for the truth – while one looks at the external, physical world and needs proofs, the other looks within, at the consciousness within and provides experiential truth.

If spirituality is scientific, is it not necessary for it to be proved beyond doubt to be believed and accepted?

The scientific nature of spirituality tells us – form a hypothesis, set up a personal experiment in meditation practice and see what the results are. This way, we realize the reality of anything ourselves.

Citing a Harvard study, Spiritual Master Kamlesh.D.Patel says that an electroencephalogram test conducted on some Buddhist monks, who have meditated for more than 20,000 hours, had entered the ‘delta’ stage (fourth level) of consciousness. Meditation, done the Heartfulness way, aims at attaining this stage much earlier.

Mr.Kamlesh Patel advocates – “Let belief be based on experience.” He also likens the present level of consciousness among humans to a thin film of water, indicating the presence of an ocean of super-consciousness above and another ocean of sub-consciousness beneath it.

Heart as the Laboratory

Heartfulness Meditation combines a scientific approach to spirituality.  There is a great underlying philosophy in meditation on the heart. The heart is the pumping station for our blood. A purified heart sends out purified blood to all parts of our body, including the smallest cells, thus purifying our entire being. We take the heart as the center for meditation as it is the center of life and by this practice, purify it and set our individual mind on the right path. The heart is the field of action of our mind and thus must always be set right to guide our mind.

Whatever you experience through a meditation process, first you prove it in your heart. Your heart thus becomes your laboratory.

Why do we meditate on the heart when the brain alone thinks of everything?

The heart is the field of work for the mind and all the points which are there in the body and the brain, almost all of them, are found in the heart and meditating on it, facilitates in purifying all those points.

Like scientists, we experiment with this meditation in our own hearts and see how we feel. These results of meditation are reproducible every time.  In scientific experiments, however, the results are reproducible under one and the same set of circumstances. The moment you change the circumstances the results will be different.

heart-full-living-map-cropped

In science, for example, water boils at 100° temperature, but is this a universal truth? No. You can boil water in the mountains at 5000 feet or 10,000 feet, at a lower temperature. Even in Science there are no fixed rules. What about the melting point of water? It is the same principle: at zero degrees at sea level water will freeze but if you put a little salt in it, it will not freeze at zero degrees. That is why we use salt when there is snow on the roads. So, this simple experiment of observing at what temperature water will boil or will freeze depends on external circumstances and also on what is present in the water – salt or no salt.

It may however be noted that in spiritual experiments, you are the judge, you are the experimenter and you can change the circumstances and yet arrive at the same conclusion: ‘Yes, meditation does make me tranquil, it does make me peaceful, it does bring calmness within me.’

When one commences Heartfulness Meditation, there is no need for faith or belief on the very first day. We are like scientists; we experiment with this method of  meditation in our own hearts and see how we feel. The experiment provides the experience.

Did you know about Tonsil Stones?

Whenever we speak about stones, we can only think about stones in gall bladder or in kidney. But have you ever heard of Tonsil Stones, or tonsilloliths?

Our tonsils are filled with nooks and crannies where bacteria and other materials, including dead cells and mucous, can become trapped. When this happens, the debris can become concentrated in white formations, the tonsil stones, that occur in the pockets. Tonsil stones are most common in teens and those with large tonsils.  Those with poor dental hygiene may also experience tonsil stones.

How do I know if I have Tonsil Stones?

Typically, tonsil stones can be seen as white, yellow or grey nodes on the tonsils. Though, many tonsil stones aren’t visible because they are burrowed down inside of the tonsil.

Some people have no symptoms when afflicted with tonsil stones. Those who do have symptoms often report redness or irritation of the tonsils. There are several other symptoms that can be related to tonsil stones, with bad breath being one of the most obvious. According to the Mayo Clinic, bacteria grow on the stones, which produces a foul odor.

People with throat stones can also feel like they have something stuck in their throats.

Watch: Funny video on How to fight a sleepy day at work!

So, how bad can it be?

Tonsil infections that lead to chronic bad breath are most often due to tonsil stones. Although tonsil stones are fairly common, many dentists and physicians miss them completely when their patients complain of halitosis.

A study published in the journal Microbes and Infection concluded that tonsil stones cause halitosis because they are crawling with anaerobic bacteria.

More about remedies for foul breath!

And what’s the remedy?

Well, it really boils down to two things :

  1. Proper dental hygiene – for starters, try to brush the stone out, keep your oral hygiene in order, gargle with salt water twice a day.
  2. Surgery – this one needs some serious consideration. Tonsil removal surgeries involve bleeding, use of anesthesia, and well, no talking for some time!

Did know about these remedies for fighting sweaty hands?

Take care!

Dangers of Bromine in Food

Bromine is a chemical compound frequently used in flame retardants, baking ingredients, cell phones, plastic, dye, soda, and prescription drugs. Bromine is found naturally in the earth’s crust and in seawater in various chemical forms. Bromine can also be found as an alternative to chlorine in swimming pools. Products containing bromine are also used in agriculture and sanitation.

Research has identified the following 10 dangers of bromine as the most damaging to human health. Edibles that carry bromine are the most dangerous, as they are directly consumed.

Source: Global Healing Center

  1. Affects Thyroid Functionality: Lack of iodine causes thyroid related health problems. Bromine on the other hand is anti-iodine. It restricts the absorption of iodine in body, which is essential for the health of thyroid hormones. Bromine exposure impairs the gland, and results in health issues like hypothyroidism, goiter, and hormonal imbalance.
What is thyroid? How is it caused?

  2. Preterm Births and Birth Defects: Another role that iodine plays is keeping the process of conception and pregnancy healthy. And as stated above, Bromine restricts iodine absorption. Exposure to bromine to expectant mothers may increase risk for delivering preterm babies. Avoiding the bromine exposure can also be tricky. Even if you avoid baking ingredients and soda, bromine can also be present in drinking water. An Australian study even reported a link between bromide exposure and birth defects.Preterm birth caused due to bromine exposure
  3. Affects Cognitive Development and Failure: Mental dysfunction related to the overexposure to bromine is so common it even has a name — bromism. In one specific case of bromism, a patient consumed vast amounts of soda that contained brominated vegetable oil. The patient experienced problems including fatigue, headache, memory problems, and loss of muscle control.

High bromine intake causes slow cognitive development.

Here is how you can take care of acnes and other skin related problems, all natural way!

  5. It is cancerous: The International Agency for the Research on Cancer has identified potassium bromate (the ingredient used in bread and baking) as a known carcinogen. Although tests have only been performed on animals, the Agency states it may also behave as a carcinogen in humans.
However, a research shows that olive oil has compound that can fight cancer. Read more.

Sleepy day at work? Wake the hell up!!

Here is how you can fight your sleep at work!

It was a Sunday and you decided to stay up late for the cricket match or a Nolan movie. Because why not? It’s still a holiday! What comes next though is a regretful, sleepy and tiring Monday! The eyes are heavy. It is a task in itself keeping the lids open and give a blank stare at the monitor. The fingers give up on typing and all you need is a nice warm cozy sleep.

Well, we can’t promise you that your boss will let you have a small nap. But here is what we got : list of stuff you could do to wake yourself the hell up!!

  1. An apple a day doesn’t just keep the doctor away. But also saves you from an angry mail from the Human Resource about your slow day at work! Having an apple in the morning, puts away the sleepiness.
An apple a day will keep anyone away, if thrown hard enough.
An apple a day will keep anyone away, if thrown hard enough.

Basically, fruit is an excellent food for giving you fast energy but without making you crash. Try eating a few pieces of fruit every 30 minutes or snacking on grapes constantly.
Did you know fresh juices too have tons of benefits!

  2. Water helps too, and not just splashing it across your face, but drinking some too! Dehydration is actually a big cause of tiredness. So what is the opposite of dehydrated? Yeah, hydration! So have lots of water.
Another benefit is, when the bladder fills up, you have to visit the loo too often which
in turn makes you move around and physically up!

    Drinking water helps keep calm
    Staying hydrated helps staying up!
  3. Cold air is a solution too. Cold air keeps your body’s heating system cranking and you will shiver yourself awake. However, if it is an Indian summer time, don’t go for the cooling option! It will only make you cozier. Rather, let yourself sweat. (word of caution: don’t forget some deodorant!)
Sweaty hands are a big put off. Here’s how you can fight it!
  4. Have some tea to fight the sleep. If you have to have one or the other it is better to go for a nice Chinese Green Tea as this has many health benefits. Green tea also helps fighting arthritis.
  5. Get some fresh air. Now this helps a lot! Sometimes sitting in a warm office with a comfortable chair, flickering computer screen and a gentle whisper of talking workmates is enough to send anyone to sleep. Go outside and breathe in some of the fresh air for a few minutes.
  6. If all fails, this might be the only solution. Watch this video for step-by-step instructions.

All you need to know about Cholesterol!

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a compound of the sterol type found in most body tissues. Cholesterol and its derivatives are important constituents of cell membranes and precursors of other steroid compounds.

Why do we need Cholesterol in our body?

  1. Balances hormones that can prevent heart diseases.
  2. Cholesterol is needed by the body to make all the sex hormones including andogen, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and DHEA.
  3. Liver bile is produced using cholesterol. Bile juices are important for digestion.
  4. Cholesterol is used by serotonin receptors .. serotonin is the body’s natural “feel-good” chemical.
  5. Helps repair damaged cells.
Narrowing of artery due to cholesterol deposits
Narrowing of artery due to cholesterol deposits

Then how come it is bad for us?

Cholesterol affects the flow of blood in our body. It hardens up and forms a layer in the arteries. This clogs up the vessels in heart and is the prime cause of heart strokes.

This is how Cholesterol affects the blood flow.

Lifestyle changes to improve Cholesterol

  1. Quit smoking
  2. Excercise daily
  3. Improve diet, reduce deep fried food, increase intake of fibres
  4. Shed the extra pounds
  5. Consume alcohol responsibilyDid you know you could predict your own heart-attack??

Eat More Of These To Have Less of Cholesterol

  1. Soy: It includes tofu, soya milk, soy nuts and soy flour. FDA recommends getting at least 25 grams of soy protein each day. Consuming 25 grams of soy protein daily lowers high cholesterol.
Here is everything about Amino Acids!
  2. Beans: It is a high fiber solution. Beans are especially high in cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber. Eating a cup of any type of beans a day—particularly kidney, navy, pinto, black, chickpea, or butter beans—can lower cholesterol by as much as 10% in 6 weeks.
  3. Salmon: The heart friendly fat is an excellent source of protein because it is high in omega-3 fatty acids called EPA and DHA that are good for your heart while low in cholesterol and saturated fat.  American Heart Association now recommends eating at least two servings of fish every week, preferably fatty fish, by far the richest sources of fish-oil omega-3s.
  4. Avocado: These delectable green orbs pack more of the cholesterol-smashing beta-sitosterol (a beneficial plant-based fat) than any other fruit. Beta-sitosterol reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food. So the combination of beta-sitosterol and monounsaturated fat makes the avocado an excellent cholesterol buster.
    Avocado can fight depression too!
  5. Tea: In our recent posts, a lot of health benefits of tea have come up. Tea can fight ArthritisFlavonoids, the major antioxidants in tea, have been shown to prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol that leads to plaque formation on artery walls. These powerful antioxidants may even reduce cholesterol and even lower blood pressure.
  6. Go Nuts: A moderate-fat diet that’s rich in the healthy monounsaturated fats found in nuts may actually be twice as good for your heart as a low-fat diet. Nuts also have vitamin E, magnesium, copper, and phytochemicals that have been linked to heart health. And walnuts are also rich in omega-3s. People who eat nuts regularly have less heart disease and other illnesses than people who don’t. The heart-healthy monounsaturated fats they contain are also better for your joints than the polyunsaturated fats found in corn and safflower oils. However, they are rich in calories! So moderation is the key!

Other foods include chocolates, margarine, spinach!
