Dangers of Bromine in Food

Bromine is a chemical compound frequently used in flame retardants, baking ingredients, cell phones, plastic, dye, soda, and prescription drugs. Bromine is found naturally in the earth’s crust and in seawater in various chemical forms. Bromine can also be found as an alternative to chlorine in swimming pools. Products containing bromine are also used in agriculture and sanitation.

Research has identified the following 10 dangers of bromine as the most damaging to human health. Edibles that carry bromine are the most dangerous, as they are directly consumed.

  1. Affects Thyroid Functionality: Lack of iodine causes thyroid related health problems. Bromine on the other hand is anti-iodine. It restricts the absorption of iodine in body, which is essential for the health of thyroid hormones. Bromine exposure impairs the gland, and results in health issues like hypothyroidism, goiter, and hormonal imbalance.

  2. Preterm Births and Birth Defects: Another role that iodine plays is keeping the process of conception and pregnancy healthy. And as stated above, Bromine restricts iodine absorption. Exposure to bromine to expectant mothers may increase risk for delivering preterm babies. Avoiding the bromine exposure can also be tricky. Even if you avoid baking ingredients and soda, bromine can also be present in drinking water. An Australian study even reported a link between bromide exposure and birth defects.Preterm birth caused due to bromine exposure
  3. Affects Cognitive Development and Failure: Mental dysfunction related to the overexposure to bromine is so common it even has a name — bromism. In one specific case of bromism, a patient consumed vast amounts of soda that contained brominated vegetable oil. The patient experienced problems including fatigue, headache, memory problems, and loss of muscle control.

  5. It is cancerous: The International Agency for the Research on Cancer has identified potassium bromate (the ingredient used in bread and baking) as a known carcinogen. Although tests have only been performed on animals, the Agency states it may also behave as a carcinogen in humans.
However, a research shows that olive oil has compound that can fight cancer. Read more.

Too much Virgin Olive Oil Harmful?

Olive oil undoubtedly has plenty of benefits. It increases life expectancies, lowers the risk of heart diseases like High Blood Pressure and stroke, has lower MUFA fats. Also, recently, a research has shown that olive oil compounds have properties that can kill cancer in about 60 minutes.

But like any other edible article, over consumption of Olive Oil may too be harmful. It is indeed possible to get too much of a good thing. If you consume too much olive oil, even high-quality extra virgin olive oil, you expose yourself to several health risks
(Source: Live Strong)

Few of the harms could be:

  1. High-Calorie Intake: Like all oils, Olive Oil too contains calories; contains 120 calories per tbsp. That’s a problem, because if you don’t burn off those calories through activity, they’ll get stored as fat, causing you to gain weight, damaging your physical appearance and exposing you to all the health risks that come with being too heavy.
  2. High-Fat Content: While olive oil is better than animal-based fats such as butter or lard, too much of any kind of fat is bad for you. Excessive fat consumption — which the American Heart Association defines as fat consumption in excess of 35 percent of your total caloric intake — increases your risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.Did you know that in a recent research, an artificial pancreas have been developed that fight diabetes far better than how insulin syringes can.
  3. Unbalanced Diet: If you eat far too much extra virgin olive oil, you may not be as hungry for the whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats you need to thrive.

Anti-Dengue Fogging is a False Sense of Security ; Ineffective Measure for 25 Years

A Delhi based green NGO, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has recently urged the government to focus on more effective measures for combating the largely spread Dengue, as the current measures of Fogging have been ineffective.

According to the NGO, the Anti-Dengue Fogging drives are nothing but a false sense of security among the public, a measure that is used by the Government’s for appeasement by wasting lakhs of litres of Diesel every year. CSE urged the government to focus on systematic preventive measures towards clean environment and sanitation. Its assessment said that 4.5 lakh litre of diesel could be used this year for fogging, which comes to 4,500 litres of diesel per day and is also equivalent to the usage of diesel by 2,000 cars in a day. CSE said that targeting adult mosquitoes offers temporary control and that too in limited settings and under ideal conditions and unless repeated frequently, fogging cannot control the next batch of adults out of the larvae. Thus, a source control is a must, using larvacides, to destroy the larva, and effectively prevent public from Dengue. The WHO guidelines on dengue too “questions” the role of fogging and recognises that fogging has been used by South-East Asian countries for the past 25 years but has not been effective.

“Medical experts suggest that direct inhalation of diesel fumes, combined with insecticides, can exacerbate asthma or bronchitis among those with respiratory ailments.

“Pregnant women, small children and old people are most susceptible to aggravation. Eye specialists also mention that diesel fumes can also cause irritation and itching on skin and eyes. Prolonged exposure could lead to temporary swelling of the corneas,” CSE said.
