Did you know about Tonsil Stones?

Whenever we speak about stones, we can only think about stones in gall bladder or in kidney. But have you ever heard of Tonsil Stones, or tonsilloliths?

Our tonsils are filled with nooks and crannies where bacteria and other materials, including dead cells and mucous, can become trapped. When this happens, the debris can become concentrated in white formations, the tonsil stones, that occur in the pockets. Tonsil stones are most common in teens and those with large tonsils.  Those with poor dental hygiene may also experience tonsil stones.

How do I know if I have Tonsil Stones?

Typically, tonsil stones can be seen as white, yellow or grey nodes on the tonsils. Though, many tonsil stones aren’t visible because they are burrowed down inside of the tonsil.

Some people have no symptoms when afflicted with tonsil stones. Those who do have symptoms often report redness or irritation of the tonsils. There are several other symptoms that can be related to tonsil stones, with bad breath being one of the most obvious. According to the Mayo Clinic, bacteria grow on the stones, which produces a foul odor.

People with throat stones can also feel like they have something stuck in their throats.

So, how bad can it be?

Tonsil infections that lead to chronic bad breath are most often due to tonsil stones. Although tonsil stones are fairly common, many dentists and physicians miss them completely when their patients complain of halitosis.

A study published in the journal Microbes and Infection concluded that tonsil stones cause halitosis because they are crawling with anaerobic bacteria.

More about remedies for foul breath!

And what’s the remedy?

Well, it really boils down to two things :

  1. Proper dental hygiene – for starters, try to brush the stone out, keep your oral hygiene in order, gargle with salt water twice a day.
  2. Surgery – this one needs some serious consideration. Tonsil removal surgeries involve bleeding, use of anesthesia, and well, no talking for some time!

Did know about these remedies for fighting sweaty hands?

Take care!

Abstract- The role of diet in the development of disease reported by many studies. The present study investigates the nutritional efficacy of pineapple juice in the treatment of Bronchial Asthma. This study has been conducted in a Nature cure and Yoga center, namely Hilltake Health Homes Pvt. Ltd. at Sanga, Bhaktapur, Delhi. Eighty-two (41 Male and 41 Female) subjects suffering with bronchial asthma were randomly allocated into the case and control groups. Forty-one subjects aged 30.22 (± 6.08) years formed the intervention group, while remaining forty-one subjects aged 32.15 (± 9.57) years constituted as control group. The general profile, medical and family history of the subject was obtained through a questionnaire cum Interview method. Intervention group was given with 100ml of pineapple juice diluted with 100ml of portable water, while the control group was given with 100ml of sweet lime juice diluted with 100ml portable water, twice a day for 90 days. Data collection was performed using a diurnal peak flow meter chart (every 10th day), a composite daily asthma score and BMI calculator (1st and 90th day). After the completion of 3 months (90 days) the results were analyzed using Microsoft Excel software. Pineapple juice significantly improved the PEFR values as well as helps in weight reduction in asthmatics, when provided in conjunction with positive lifestyle changes like yoga, breathing exercises, smoking cessation, massages etc.

“Sir, the burger would be $4 and 900 Calories, please!”

Next time you visit an eating joint, you might as well hear the guy on the register saying, “That would be $4 and 900 calories, please!”

In a recent development, in United States of America, it has been mandated that every restaurant, pub and cinema chain should be displaying the calorie content of their food and drink. The same practice is already being followed by many joints in United Kingdom.

According to BBC :

Izzi Seccombe, chairman of the LGA’s community well-being board, said: “We are calling on cinema, restaurant and pub chains to step up and show leadership in tackling the obesity crisis, by providing clear and graphic signs at counters and on menus.

“In many cases, people are unaware of how many calories they are consuming.

“Food and drink outlets should be doing more to provide clear and prominent labelling which spells this out clearly.”

Soft drinks are said to be the biggest contributor to the obesity problems in kids these days, around the world. The move should be a welcoming one, as now one can observe and record his/her calorie intake, even when eating out. Also, perhaps, out of sheer shyness, of public display of calorie intact, we may cut on intake as well!! Great move for ones under diet plans!

News From R&D

FICCI Research and Analysis Centre (FRAC) not only aims at providing best quality testing and results services, but its state of the art Research and Development facility makes sure that our consumers get to have all the added information about their products.

Here are a list of food articles, and findings corresponding to them, according to our R&D team :

  1. Therapeutic FoodTherapeutic food in general, is any a[[rp[roate food product or products, enhanced nutritionally, and thus, made to be more energy-dense and nutrient-dense. When needed, usually in the emergency situations, it should be used in effect as medicine, in conjunction with necessary therapy, for as short a time as possible. The subject of this commentary is a specific type of therapeutic food, now almost always in the form of commercial products, which in te last several years has leapt onto the nutrition scene. It has some special benefits. It is creating new opportunities, new challenges, and in our judgement, an increasing number of new problems. The this is to warn that the promotion of therapeutic food and its wider use may well undermine breastfeeding, which for children between 6-24+ months of age, is the best safeguard against malnutrition. Therapeutic food is high in energy and protein, with added electrolytes, mineral and vitamins.
  2. High Fibre Bread : High fibre is used to lower glucose levels, and increasing the dietary bulk. Rice bran contents were used as an ingredient to increase the nutritional value of bread. With this view point, the high fibre bread was prepared.
  3. Badam Kesar Milk Fortification : Health drink full of nutrition. Useful for all age group people. Simple recipe of milk kesar fortified, with appropriate vitamin and mineral mix to provide adequate nutrition.
  4. Diabodellite Cookies : New products were developed/designed for one of our customers from the bakery industry, new ingredients were introduced to increase the binding of the prepared cookies by our department and thereby, increasing the storage and logistics problem faced by them. This product was specially designed for diabetic patients to lower their blood pressure.
